Swine Flu Epidemic

Swine influenza is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza viruses. Sometimes it may spread to Humans and cause flu-like symptoms. The virus is influenza A virus, carrying the designation H1N1. It is a hybrid reassorted virus and contains DNA typical to avian, swine and human viruses, including elements from European and Asian swine viruses. It clasically causes outbreaks from Mid March to mid May and commonly causes fever, headache, fatigue and cough. As yet, none of the Eight Swine flu cases diagnosed in US has proved fatal, though sources report about 80 fatal cases in Mexico in the past few weeks.

European researchers has created a genetically modified (GM) maize or corn, produce large amounts of beta carotene and precursors of vitamin C and folic acid. Papers is published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

“Evolution and Religion” is a book conducted in dialogue form. It is laid out in five chapters, each of which is a dialogue between the same four “guests” and a “host” on a public television show called Eternal Questions. As the title points out, the topic of these five episodes all focus on various questions to do with the relationship between evolution and religion.

April 22, 2009 was the 40th Earth Day. The focus of this year’s World: THE GREEN GENERATION, and the focus in China: the development of awareness to protect the Earth – Learn about our home. Purpose is to raise public awareness of national resources, especially utilization and management earth science resources for sustainable development, as well as an important role in disaster prevention and mitigation awareness.

Pollen allergy is called hay fever. Generally cause allergies are those of anemophilous plants, their pollen is dispersed by air currents. Such plants produce large quantities of lightweight pollen, which can be carried for great distances and are easily inhaled, bringing it into contact with the sensitive nasal passages. Around world, about 5 %~10 % people fall in hay fever. Persons may suffer from an itching congested and running nose, a sore nasal-throat cavity, sneezing, caughing, watery and sometimes bloodshot eyes and also perhaps a light thightness of the chest. Other symptoms include: headache, fatigue, inflammation of sinuses and throat.

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) says it has determined genetic engineering is unlikely to play a significant role in increasing food production. According to a report by UCS expert Doug Gurian-Sherman released in March 2009. Despite 20 years of research and 13 years of commercialization, genetic engineering has failed to significantly increase U.S. crop yields.

From the April 10 issue of 《Science》, scientists say in a study that holds clues to the evolution of green plants. Alexandra Worden and colleagues sequenced the genomes of two strains of Micromonas, which are ancient relatives of land plants and are found throughout the world’s oceans. These genomes reveal features of the ancestral algae that launched the billion-year trajectory of plant evolution and the greening of the Earth.
